Why Be A Local Chapter Advisor?

Why be an advisor? Who can be advisors? What benefits do the advisers receive? What do you like most about being an advisor?

We asked a few local advisors to answer these questions. Here are their responses:

Julie Williams- Oak Creek

Why be an advisor?

My main reason for being an advisor is offering students a great learning opportunity to grow as a future health professional through leadership skills, community outreach, and career exploration.

Who can be advisors?

Any career and technical education teacher, more specifically health science teacher, who is passionate about helping students grow in and outside the classroom.

What benefits do the advisors get?

By serving as a HOSA advisor, I have seen firsthand the numerous benefits this career and technical organization has. I personally enjoy watching my students grow as young future health professionals. They are challenged to grow personally and also the sense of family that is created stays with them a lifetime. Knowledge, skills, and growth made through HOSA changes lives, which changes the world.

What do you like most about being an advisor?

Watching my HOSA members grow from freshmen to seniors in their journey is very rewarding. The majority of students who come back to tell me their success stories, i.e graduating from medical school, passing their NCLEX exam, earning their credentials makes me feel proud they started their career path with HOSA!

Kathy Wiesman- Sheboygan

Why be an advisor?

Being an advisor gives you an opportunity to work with students outside the classroom.

Who can be advisors?

Someone who teaches in the district with a health science class (i.e. intro to med, med term, etc.).

What benefits do the advisors get?

There are many benefits. We have the opportunity to also make new friends and work with some amazing students outside of the classroom setting.

What do you like most about being an advisor?

I like to watch my students grow in their leadership skills and confidence. I like working with them as they prepare for their competitive events. I learn along with my students.

Michelle Gallagher- Sun Prairie

Why be an advisor?

To be able to interact with a great group of students who are passionate about health care careers.

Who can be advisors?

Teachers, local school/college officials. Any teacher can become an advisor so long as they are willing to be dedicated to their students.

What benefits do the advisors get?

It is fun, you get to travel to California, Tennessee, and Florida!

What do you like most about being an advisor?

Seeing a kid set goals and then meeting those goals and getting to know these young professionals as they grow and strengthen their leadership skills.

Ruth Buchner- Chippewa Falls

Why be an advisor?

It is an amazing way of promoting the Health Science program at our school. You can find ways to give students the opportunity to become involved in health-related volunteer opportunities which helps them as they apply for scholarships. You can offer students an organization they can identify with and take a leadership role in. The relationship between advisor and member builds with every year the student is in HOSA.

Who can be advisors?

Anyone in the school system that is a certified staff member and works directly with a Health Science program.

What benefits do the advisors get?

Mentorship of students who want to belong in an organization to further their interest in Health Science as a career. Knowing that you open doors for students they wouldn't have without HOSA.

What do you like most about being an advisor?

Giving students the opportunity to find ways to improve their receiving scholarships or getting into a college by doing volunteer work and/or taking leadership roles in an organization while in high school. Getting to know students outside the classroom setting.

Maguita Stroud- Washington Park

Why be an advisor?

Being an advisor gives me an opportunity to mentor students as they prepare for their future career. Not only do advisors grow professionally, but also develop personal relationships with students.

Who can be advisors?

Preferably a teacher who is teaching health sciences. However, any individual who is certified teaching in the district and has a strong interest in the health profession.

What benefits do the advisors get?

Getting to know students better!

I enjoy watching my students grow professionally. I push them to utilize all their potential and continue to reach further. I am also passionate about giving back to my community and encourage the same for my students.
